To Juice or not to Juice

To juice or not to juice

Many people ask me what I think about juicing. My answer is that it all depends on what your goal is. Fresh fruit juice is loaded with sugar. Although it is natural, it is still sugar...and in most cases, lots of it. Yes, it is a good way to get in nutrients and if you need to avoid fiber, it is definitely an option. If you have teeth issues and cannot chew, then yes ok…but if you have blood sugar issues, this could be a problem.

The next time you are in a grocery store, take a look at the fresh fruit juices and check what the sugar content is. I have found it to be as much as 34 grams of sugar per serving. That’s huge! I would recommend keeping some on hand, but definitely water it down by adding a splash of it to your water for flavor. I cannot remember when I last drank a glass of 100% orange juice. If I would, it would certainly be high pulp juice as the pulp / fiber will help with the slow release of sugar into your system and not spike sugar levels as much. So if you don’t have health issues i.e. high blood sugar, and no teeth or chewing problems - I would recommend just eating the real fruit instead of juicing. You will certainly consume less sugar and less calories, because after eating a whole fruit, you will most probably be full and would not be able consume much more. Now vegetables could be an alternative, but keep in mind that carrots and beets are also high in sugar. In short, I would say that if you want to lose weight, stay away from juicing. If you have blood sugar issues stay away from juicing. If you are needing more nutrients and do not want to take vitamin supplements, then juicing could be the answer for you as long as you are ok with the extra calories and sugar. They do add up quickly, so do beware. So ask yourself is the juice worth the squeeze. 😆
