Starting The New Year Out Right!

Many people have great intentions of losing the extra weight or getting healthier, but many fail unfortunately after 3 weeks or so of working out. Why is this so? A lot of the time, it is because people have unrealistic expectations of themselves. “I’m going to workout every morning at 6 am”. I  have heard this a lot and when I do, I just think that you are setting yourself up for failure.

My suggestion is start off with 3 times a week, especially if you have not done any exercise for 3 - 6 months. Strength training as well as cardio (metabolic conditioning) is the way to go. Many people just  do Cardio all the time, but remember that muscle is your fat burning machinery. “Burn the Fat, Feed the Muscle“ by Tom Venuto is a great book to read to educate yourself on the subject.

My advice is to set realistic goals and not to put yourself under too much pressure. Do a combination of strength training and cardio, weather it is kickboxing, treadmill, walking outside… or other activity, as long as you get moving. Once you start, you will feel amazing and the workouts will get easier over time. There are many tech apps and devices that can help you in the process. I love the MyFitnessPal app and the Polar heart rate monitor to help track calorie intake and expenditure. You can do it - just get going!!!
